Mosaic Ark Wall and Eternal Light
for David Saperstein Middle School Beit Midrash Designed by Debra Sokolow, the Director of Architectural Design in the Visual Arts
Department at Milken Community High School
The Ark Wall Mosaic, cherry wood Ark Doors and the Eternal Light have been
a year and a half-long creative collaboration facilitated by Debra
Sokolow, who shaped the design and theme of the seven species with a team
of 14 dedicated art students from Grades 7 through 12.
Milken's community of Middle and Upper School students, faculty, parents, administration,
staff, and alumni had an opportunity to place glass pieces within the
design.
Sokolow’s goal was to create a space that provided young
students a comfortable and inspirational learning environment intended for
general and Jewish studies while maintaining the ambiance of a sacred
space filled with light and color.....
The goal of the mosaic was to create an image that was not static.
Undulating areas were created throughout the mosaic to create a sense of
movement. To create depth, darker colors were used near the bottom of a
section. Lighter colors were placed at the top of each section to give
the illusion of light dancing across the top off the plains and simulating
the wind. Vincent Van Gogh’s style inspired the wavy paths of the sky
leading up to the Eternal Light.
The overall intention is for the viewer to at first see the image for what
it is, a landscape of our culture and heritage, and then experience its
spirituality – and respond with reverence to its beauty.
